Microsoft on Monday responded to reports of potential zero-day attacks against a large number of Windows programs by publishing a tool it said would block known exploits. These practices could allow an attacker to remotely execute arbitrary code in the context of the user running the vulnerable application when the user opens a file from an untrusted location. Other exploits aimed at leveraging DLL load hijacking bugs in uTorrent and Wireshark, a BitTorrent client and network protocol analyzer, respectively. However Microsoft also had clarified that the flaw isn’t in Windows. Less than 24 hours after Microsoft said it couldn't patch Windows to fix a systemic problem, attack code appeared Tuesday to exploit the company's software. The tool restricts the loading of remote libraries and blocks the loading of DLLs from remote directories, such as those on USB drives, Web sites and an organization’s network, and all possible vectors. This update introduces a new registry key CWDIllegalInDllSearch that allows users to control the DLL search path algorithm. The DLL search path algorithm is used by the LoadLibrary API and the LoadLibraryEx API when DLLs are loaded without specifying a fully qualified path. In less than a day post release of the DLL patch by Microsoft, it has been identified that around 41 Microsoft applications are vulnerable, and need immediate patching which includes MS Powerpoint 2010, and Windows Live which is shipped with Windows Vista operating system.
