Alienware M17x Laptop Review

Alien ware’s latest gaming laptop has been dubbed the most powerful gaming laptop in the universe. Quite the bold claim in the competitive performance laptop market. If there’s one thing that’s certain, you’ll at least feel powerful sitting in front of its massive 17 inch screen, 12 pound aluminum body and glowing lighting effects.

The M17x is a desktop replacement. The idea behind a desktop replacement laptop is to give consumers the power and expandability of a desktop PC in the convenience of a portable laptop body. The M17x has 4 USB ports, an external SATA port, two 2.5” Drive bays, and your standard gigabit Ethernet port with Wireless N card.
The M17x’s keyboard is massive and solid. The keys don’t have any flex to them, so it’s as if you’re typing on a legitimate desktop keyboard. As with Alienware’s previous desktop replacement systems, there’s a full number pad, too, which means you can store all of your macros in games such as World of Warcraft.

Above the keyboard are soft-touch buttons for ejecting Blue-ray discs, full media controls for skip and play/pause, volume controls, a wireless launch button, and quick-launch buttons for the system’s AlienFusion control panel.

The touchpad on the M17x is large and flush with the wrist rest, except for a small glowing border; its honeycomb texture allows for swift finger glides across the surface. The two touchpad buttons offered good feedback.

The M17x has a large 17-inch display with a flushed glass plate that covers the entire surface. The high-gloss finish results in a fair amount of glare, so you’ll want to hold off on playing games or watching movies until you dim the lights.
